Charlie Duffy is a 27 year old disabled man who lives in a world without Batman, he works as a convenience store worker in New York and is friendly and well known in the neighbourhood. Currently, he is waiting for the countdown for the newest Batman movie coming in 23rd June 1989. He occasionally delivers groceries to Sinclair, who Charlie called Catwoman due to her being a cat lady, and Mike, his landlord on apartment duties. He also sometimes get picked on. Larry's another convenience store worker, friends due to his mental state. During his work, he saw an old friend Clarissa, who played as Robin 12 years ago and was shocked when she stole food from the store. This perplexed Charlie and wonder why his friend turned bad and who is responsible. He explained the events to Mike and reminded the time she left the apartment and moved out which was the last time Charlie saw Clarissa. Mike believed that the girl Charlie saw could not have been Clarissa. As days pass by, he saw Clarissa once more who she steal and decide to follow her. He found her meeting her ex boyfriend, Darrin, a drug dealer as well, in the park and offer a place to stay. Charlie interpreted that Darrin is the Joker and corrupt Clarissa to be a thief, he intervened but was easily subdued by Darrin. Clarissa recognize her old friend and before Darrin kills Charlie, Clarissa convinced him that Charlie is just a retard and offer to stay at his place in order to protect him. Charlie was left disheartened and was found by Mr Hernandez and escorted back to the grocery store for work. Clarissa was taken to Darrin's place which is a derelict and rundown building and she has to act as a 'hostess' for his friends. She decides to leave and meet up with her old friend, she talk about her past where she is a wanderer after her parents divorce and decide to hang out in Charlie's home. Back home, Charlie warns Clarissa that Darrin is a bad man and influence especially when he saw a scar on her arm. He decided to let her stay in his room for the night. The next day, while leaving, she saw a lockbox filled with Charlie's parents valuables which she stole some and took the old photo of Charlie and Clarissa when they are Batman and Robin. As they leave, they encounter Mike on the way which he is suspicious of Clarissa stealing some valuables. She was caught in the act and left, leaving Charlie brokenhearted with Mike reminding that Clarissa changed. Charlie decides to search for Clarissa in the rainy day for her to explain that it was a misunderstanding. She replied that she did steal from him. Unfortunately, Darrin was in the scene selling drugs and intervened, this led to a brief scuffle where Charlie was injured. This made him recover for few days and missing out for the Batman movie debut, still he and Mike when to watch the movie which inspires Charlie, to be the 1989 version of Batman to be mean in order to save Clarissa. Meanwhile, Clarissa was abused by Darrin. Tired of the abuse, she decides to leave the place but not before stealing all the the money and drugs. However, she accidentally left the photo which allowed Darrin and his gang to find her whereabouts at Charlie's home. Clarissa visit Charlie secretly and ask him to forget about her and that she is leaving town. However, Betty was taken hostage as she enter the apartment which led Mike intervening. Mike managed to disarm Darrin knife but was overwhelm in the process while Betty call for the police. Betty decide to surrender the money and drugs to Darrin. Charlie decides to save Clarissa but due to inexperience in fighting, was caught off guard. Clarissa decides to escape and throw away the money and drugs, but was caught and beaten. Charlie chases after them and use the bat to knock Darrin out, unfortunately this led Charlie to be beaten down by Darrin. Sinclair saw the whole events and calls Spivak for help which the boss calls Larry to intervene. Larry soon calls his friends to help with the neighbours saving Charlie, their help managed to get Darrin and his gang caught by the police while Charlie is recovered by the paramedics. As he is taken to the ambulance, Clarissa apologizes to Charlie for getting to her mess but Charlie says that it is not her fault. As the ambulance leaves, Mike reminds Clarissa that Charlie risked his life to save her and what is her life worth herself. Ten days later, Clarissa decides to apologize to Mike for her selfish behaviour and told Mike her goals that she wanders around to find a purpose in life. She wanted to be forgotten for a while and check up on Charlie, she also returns the stolen photo which Mike reminds her that Clarissa is always in Charlie's heart.
